 Know Your Shotsizes

Shots are commonly divided up into 5-9 different types. Each provides a particular effect, so you should use a variety of them all.
Very Long Shot (VLS)
A very long shot gives the viewer ‘geography’ and sets the scene for where our film is taking place.
  Long Shot (LS)
A long shot shows your subject fully in their surroundings. Be careful not to cut people off at the ankles or head.
  Medium Shot (MS)
The mid shot cuts off at the waist. It is a good shot to introduce people to your audience.
  Medium Close Up (MCU)
The MCU is the standard news interview shot.
  Close Up (CU)
The Close Up will typically just have the face in it. We are starting to get more personal with our shot the closer we get.
  Big Close Up (BCU)
The BCU is a very intimate shot & great in a dramatic moment when the actor is showing emotion.
  Extreme Close Up (ECU)
The ECU is a very, very intimate shot or can be used for intense viewpoints of something.

Hints & Tips – Frame Up
